Book Review: Warriors (Warrior Cats) by Erin Hunter

For the Red Cat Society, I have tried to find references to red cats in literary works. Here is a whole series of novels for young people with a red cat as protagonist:

'Warriors' is a series of novels about the adventures of four rivaling groups or clans of feral cats living in a wooded area of the UK. Stop here, if you want to read this amazing story without knowing too many details. Scroll down to the row of stars after this one:

******

Six novels follow the career of Rusty, an ordinary ginger tom kitten, who runs away from his humans and joins a band of feral cats called Thunderclan, who are the wild cats living in the woods behind his suburban home. Because of his daring and sense of pride in being a cat, Rusty is accepted into the clan and rises through the ranks within their cat-heirarchy from apprentice to warrior and finally clan-leader.

With each new status, Rusty is renamed. Rusty becomes Firepaw as apprentice, Fireheart as warrior and finally Firestar as clan leader. There are many memorable characters throughout these six books. Bluestar is Thunderclan's amazing female leader and Rusty's mentor.

Tigerclaw/Tigerstar is a strong, powerful, but corrupt warrior and then later deputy in Thunderclan. Tigerclaw/Tigerstar becomes Rusty's/Firepaw's/Fireheart's/ Firestar's arch-rival.

Spotted-Leaf, a beautiful young medicine-cat, with whom Firepaw falls in love and dreams about many times long after her tragic death.

Yes, death. These are books in which many cats die. The cats believe in Starclan, where the spirits of dead cats who have lived a clan-cat-worthy life, dwell. It is Cat-Heaven. Among the clan-cats, dreams and visions reveal what is to happen or which way to choose in this very harsh outdoor feline-life. In several ways these cat societies resemble primative human tribes. There are no human characters in the Warrior Cat-books. Cats must rely on themselves or other cats. There are a lot of clever solutions to how cats can do things. The medicine cats show many wonderful examples of this.

******
This is a fantasy-book for us cats, even though the publishers market it as good reading for two-legged kits from eight years old of age and up. (These six books are real page-turners that even grown-ups humans can enjoy, if they want to read fast-paced adventure books with happy ends and good morals.) If you have ever wondered or dreamed about how life would be if you left home for good and joined forces with strong and clever wild cats, this is the book for you. Ask your human to read it aloud for you.

Purrs,
Sara Cat

Christmas Card Fail

Who would have thought their cat would rather run and play in the snow than to sit on their owner safe from the cold wet stuff? Well, I guess me.

While I lay there making a snow angel, Hobbes bailed to chase imaginary snow flakes in the yard--making our Christmas card photo extra difficult.

Anywho....

Merry Christmas to all our Red Cat friends and followers!

Red Kittens update

These photos have been posted before on my blog, Anna's Adornments for an alphabet-meme for Jenny Matlock. I am posting them again here because I haven't really said that much about the red kittens that were going to live with us.

The photo above shows Anna-Lisa nursing her two kits, Anna-Matilda and Nils. These are the kittens that I had hoped would be be ours. But as I have mentioned before, they have found another home and will not be going to the children Elisabet and Erik. We all miss the kittens, who are almost grown now, but are happy that they are living with good peop
le.

A little later, the kits have grown...

More time passes and they almost look like grown up cats.

It seems ironic, but we will be working with a blog for red cats, without having any red cats of our own! But one day we will.

Until then, it is good to be among all of these beautiful blogging red cats!

Best wishes,
Anna

The Master of Zen

Has anyone else noticed that Hobbes has mastered the art of relaxation? May we all remember to take a few minutes to do the same in the upcoming madness of the season.

Autumn Sun

The weather is growing colder with every day that passes. But that doesn't stop Hobbes from trying to snag every last bit of warm sunshine on his belly.

Such trust for a cat, eh?

Red Kitty is on the Make

Is it the full moon or the season? I can't explain it but Red Kitty is really feeling, shall we say, very frisky the past couple of days. The object of his affections is Mariah (don't worry, they are both fixed!) Just now, he caught my attention because he was calling/crying like crazy. Just standing in the middle of the living room, downstairs, screaming his little head off. Very strange.

Of course, I'm concerned that somehow I've damaged him by leaving him so alone for so long over the past summer...with no company but other cats. He and Mariah are, and for years now have been, best buddies. So she tolerates his sexual advances, though I think she's clueless about what's on his mind. These little "attacks" turn into wrestling matches as Mariah wiggles out of being pinned down from behind.

They all seem very happy that I'm back living in the house with them. The past week, since I've been back, they follow me from room to room and basically hang out where ever I'm doing stuff. Yes, I do believe I'm the recipient of lots of kitty love...lucky me!

The Adventures of Milo and Otis-movie

Hey everyone!  I just bought my 3 year old "The Adventures of Milo and Otis", a live-animal sort of action story with a pug and an orange kitty and their adventures.  It took four years to film, in Japan, and features lots of wildlife, as well as the birth of kittens and puppies.  Really adorable, and I was assured that no kitties were hurt in the filming (they do get into some mischief).  Really cute for Red Cat Lovers!  I got the DVD at Target for $5.00.  It's also soothing, with simple narration by Dudley Moore (no explosions, obscenities, or humans are ever seen).

'Tis good to be orange.....and a kitty.

What is soooo interesting?

Irish and Maddux have now become pals and seem to be almost attached at the hip at times. Here they are together staring intently by my front door.

What do you think they are staring at?

Update: Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. It's Lin. They are bug huntin'. The porch light was on and moths were gathering outside the door. They were mesmerized for literally an hour by them. Lol!

Goodbye Summer, Goodbye Admirals

September brings about the closing of summer and the disappearance of the tormenting butterflies. Poor Hobbes--I think he's bored now that the Admirals have sort of moved on.

He never did catch one--well, that I know of anyway.

Baby Hobbes

I've been going through baby photos again as my son leaves for college for the first time. It's hard to believe he has grown up so quickly!! Well, both of them, actually. Time flies, doesn't it?

Tom's not feeling friendly!

He doesn't want to make eye contact, except to glare.  Still handsome, in that aloof movie-star way!

Thanks to EC-bloggers July 27th to August 1st, 2010

Seated here on the kitchen table on the farm, Calle sends purrs and kind regards to all of his blogging friends.

This photo is a little redish because I snapped it late in the evening in the TV-room upstairs. Calle says that he is enjoying life as a country gentle-cat, and is keeping up with The Red Cat Society.

Hope he decides to come home to us!
